2019-2020 Season
2020 saw disruption to county football due to Covid-19. However, there was plenty of success prior to the pandemic, with the Under 16 boys winning the National Final and the Under 18 Boys being declared joint winners of the National Cup. Both Under 16 and Under 18 boys also won their respective MCF leagues. This was the first time 2 SSFA sides have reached (and won) the national final in the same season!
The Under 18 Boys were due to meet Gloucestershire having negotiated their way through ties against Cheshire (5-0), South Yorkshire (4-2) and Lancashire (2-1) to set up their place in the final. The management team of Mark Culverhouse, Greg Valentine and Matt Skinner were looking forward to leading out an extremely talented group which included three internationals from this seasons ESFA U18 squad. Having already clinched the MCF title the boys were confident of putting on a good show to try and bring the U18 National title to Staffordshire for the first time.
The Under 16 Boys were met Bedfordshire having beaten Humberside (3-1), West Midlands (3-1) Cardiff and the Vale (4-1) and North Yorkshire (2-1) to earn their final tie. The team remained unbeaten in the 2019-2020 season and were looking to add a second title for managers Bailey Evans and Oz Rowley this time assisted by ex players Alex Minshull and Jack Bromfield. The majority of the squad had been together for three years and were superb ambassadors for their schools.
It is hoped the National Finals would still be concluded after being postponed due to Covid-19, but the Under 18 Boys have already being declared joint winners, which is still a huge achievement for SSFA. The Under 16 boys final went ahead on October 31st at Lilleshall Sports Centre, with Staffordshire winning 2-1. The match report can be found here
The Under 15 Boys also impressively won the MCF in 2019-20, with the Under 14 boys finishing as runners up in their MCF campaign to top off a hugely successful season for SSFA boys
The 2019-2020 season for both under 14 and 16 girls were disadvantaged compared to previous seasons due to RTC's not releasing players for fixtures. Solutions are trying to be found to ensure Girls representative football will continue in the manner it previously has done.
